WHEN WE SAY BUY NF AT 4300 .. we mean BUY NIFTY FUTURES (lot size 50) at

4300 .... if nifty moves to 4310 and we sell ... we make Rs 10 x 50 = Rs

500 profit

OK - OPTIONS.. lets go back to the old example of copper buyer and the

copper dealer

copper buyer needs 1000 K copper in Nov... he wants to safeguard himself

from inflation... Copper dealer asks for 30% to be paid as advance if he

wants to get a copper futures contract ....

30% of 1 lakh is Rs 30,000 .. lets say copper buyer doesnt even have that

much money to pay

but copper buyer is sure that the price of copper will go up ... but the

copper dealer thinks the copper buyer is a fool since prices of copper

will actually fall

So he says to copper buyer ... Dont pay me Rs 30000 advance... just pay

me Rs 2 per KG or Rs 2000... I promise you that I will deliver you copper

@ 100 per KG in Nov .... do you think the copper buyer should give that

Rs 2000 to the dealer ????

By the way ... the copper dealer says this Rs 2000 is not adjustable ..

so you will still need to pay Rs 1 lakh in Nov if you want to buy .. no

matter whether the prices are still Rs 100 per KG or Rs 150 per KG ...

.... kind of 'insurance' premium

Absolutely .... if copper is below 100 .. there is no point going to the

dealer and buy at 100 per KG .. he goes to open market ... he just loses

that Rs 2000 he paid to the dealer

But if copper is 110 per KG .. will he go to the dealer or not?

at 110 copper ... though he paid Rs 2 per KG as premium.. he still saved

Rs 8 per KG by doing that contract .. right???

great - we have just seen an example of an 'OPTION' contract .. here the

copper buyer has paid Rs 2 premium to dealer to GET A RIGHT TO BUY AT 100

per KG in NOV ... BUT HE DOES NOT HAVE THE OBLIGATION TO BUY AT 100 if

markets are below 100 ... YEAH???

If he was a speculator .. he is risking Rs 2 per KG hoping copper prices

will go above 102 so that he makes a profit ... RIGHT?? becuase till 101,

102 he will not make any profit

Anil - yes Risk is small in options than futures

The copper buyer here is the OPTIONS BUYER

The copper dealer here is the OPTION SELLER OR WRITER

Options are of two types.... Call option ... below was an example of CALL

option ... the copper buyer bought the CALL option of strike price 100

per KG for premium Rs 2 per KG ... CLEAR???

the second type is PUT option .. which is bought when a speculator think

markets would fall

ok one more thing ... the copper dealer asked for Rs 2 per KG to promise

to sell at 100 per KG which was the Current market price of copper....

Now he can also give a choice to the copper buyer .. hey .. if you agree

to buy copper at 105 instead of 100 .. you can just pay me Rs 1 per KG

and not Rs 2 per KG ...

So the copper buyer is getting option to buy at 100 for premium 2 rs ..

and another option to buy at 105 for premium 1 Rs

both are call options

the contract at Rs 100 per KG is 'AT THE MONEY' since copper current

price is also 100

The contract of 105 is called 'OUT OF MONEY' since CMP is 100 whereas you

are promising to buy at 105

the more OUT OF MONEY an option is .. THE PREMIUM PAID GETS SMALLER

Lets come back to stock markets ....

RIL is trading at 1000 right now ... I think RIL share prices will shoot

up .... should i be buying a Call option or PUT option?

we discussed that if I think markets will go up I will buy a CALL .. and

if i think markets will come down I will but a PUT

so RIL at 1000 .. I will buy a 1000 strike price CA

CA stands for Call american .. CE stand for Call European

All Index options (Nifty, Bank Nifty for eg) have european options ..

hence 4200 CE, 4300 CE, 4200 PE etc

All stock options have American options .. like RIL 2000 CA, 1900 PA etc

IN INDIAN CONTEXT THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AMERICAN CONTRACT AND

EUROPEAN CONTRACT >> YOU CAN JUST IGNORE IT

what does exit 4300 ce now at 6.75 mean

.. we had bought Nifty 4300 CE or call option at Rs 35 .. It was trading

at 6.75 when i said sell it off

BUY NF NOW 4250 SL 4240

BUY NF 4250 SL 4240 means we buy at 4250 ... stop loss is 4240 so we exit

if 4240 comes .. which means Rs 10 x 50 = Rs 500 loss per lot.. that was

our risk

But we booked NF at 4267 .. so we made a profit of Rs 17 x 50 = Rs 850

per lot .. we took a risk of Rs 500 per lot and made a profit of Rs 850

per lot

PUT ok ... lets say Nifty is at 4400 right now ... I believe markets

would fall to 4200 in coming days

4400 put is at 100 right now .. I buy it at 100 ... my total risk is 100

points only or Rs 100 x 50 = Rs 5000

if markets dont fall at all entire month ..i lose my Rs 5000 ... but if

markets fall to 4200 or 4100... I can make Rs 15000 profit

It has been long time posting on this blog. Last time i have posted, when i have come to US for the first time. Now again I am back in US for the second time, between these two trips many major personal things happened.

I have started on 26th Oct 2007(Friday) from Hyderabad by Singapore airlines and reached San Fransisco on 27th Oct 2007(Saturday). It was somewhere around 36hrs of travel time. This time, my stay would be only for 6 weeks.

Traveling to new places was one of my hobbies. But travelling so far that too to a different country was a first time experience in my life. Its like travelling to a place, just on opposite side of the earth. That was really a thrilling experience. I took KLM flight at Begumpet airport, Hyderabad on 10th march'07 and had transist halt in Amsterdam, Netherlands and from there landed at San Fransisco, CA. Though it was tiresome journey for 26hours, still charged up with energy looking forward for the coming days...

Many of us wanted to be Confident, Happy, Fearless, have Love and Peace in life. The simple mantra to have all this is just start behaving as if you already have them in you. Yes, that's true. If you wanted to be Confident, act as if you already have a good confidence within you. The moment you think like that, lack of confidence is nowhere in you. Similarly anything, if you wanted to be Happy, start being Happy. Just act as if you are Happy, you will be Happy.

Interospection: 'Being' and 'Wanting'

There is a lot of difference between 'being' and 'wanting'. Many of us wanted to be Happy in our lives. A person can be Happy, by being Happy. One cannot be happy just by thinking wanted to be happy. There is a suttle difference between these two states of mind. Only thoughts in our minds can make this difference. So a single thought can be a friend or enemy for our ownself. Just by thinking to be happy is not enough, its like being Happy will make your life Happy.

Do you know Browsers handle sessions differently..! IE can handle multiple session IDs at a time, whereas Firefox, Netscape, and Mozilla do not. Thus, you can have multiple accounts open in IE simultaneously, but can only have one account open in the others browsers.

Gmail storage space increases on and on forever..?

Google's Gmail inbox storage space increases like the sand in Hour glass. The storage space keeps on increasing for every second. Initially when it got started it was 1GB, but now it went upto 2.7GB(as on today 2786MB). The growth of increase is a meager 4bytes per second it seems, if this continues at the same phase it will mount to 3GB by mid 2009. One thing that still astonishes me is Gmail is released on 1st April 2004. After more than two and a half years, Gmail is officially still in beta.

History of Golconda...interesting

Golkonda is a ruined city and fortress 11 km west of the city of Hyderabad. The city and fortress are built on a granite hill that is 120 meters high and is surrounded by massive crenellated ramparts. The beginnings of the fort date to the 1143, when the Hindu Kakatiya dynasty ruled the area. The Kakatiyas were followed by the state of Warangal, which was later conquered by the Muslim Bahmani Sultanate.

How did the name come..?

According to one story, the fort derives its name from Golla Konda, which is the Telugu word for Shepherd's Hill. It is said that a shepherd boy came across an idol on the hill. This led to the construction of a mud fort by the then Kakatiya ruler of the kingdom around the site. Subsequently the fort was administered by Recherla Vellamas who ruled over Golkonda, Rajaconda and Devarconda. Their capital was Rajaconda. Following the defeat of the Recherla Velamma kingdom, the three forts fell to the Bahamani Kings (1364). Following the collapse of the Bahamani Kingdom, Golkonda rose to prominence as the seat of the Qutb Shahi dynasty around 1507. Over a period of 62 years the mud fort was expanded by the first three Qutb Shahi kings into a massive fort of granite, extending around 5 km in circumference. It remained the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty until 1590 when the capital was shifted to Hyderabad. The Qutb Shahis expanded the fort, whose 10 km outer wall enclosed the city. The Qutb Shahi sultanate lasted until its conquest by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1687. The fortress held out against Aurangzeb for eight months, falling to the Mughals through treachery.

Golkonda consists of four distinct forts with a 10 km long outer wall having 87 semi circular bastions; some still mounted with cannons, eight gateways, four drawbridges and number of royal apartments & halls, temples, mosques, magazines, stables etc, inside. The lowest of these is the outermost enclosure into which we enter by the 'Fateh Darwaza' (Victory gate, so called after Aurangzeb’s triumphant army marched in through this gate) studded with giant iron spikes ( to prevent elephants from battering them down) near the south-eastern corner. At Fateh Darwaza can be experienced the fantastic acoustic effects, characteristic of the engineering marvels at Golkonda. A hand clap at a certain point below the dome at the entrance reverberates and can be heard clearly at the 'Bala Hisar' pavilion, the highest point almost a kilometre away. This acted as the warning note to residents in case of danger.

Hyderabad, Oct. 12: The clampdown on online gaming in the United States may take a toll in India as Ivy Comptech, the Indian subsidiary of PartyGaming may shed a significant percentage of its 1,600-strong workforce in Hyderabad, sources familiar with the development said. PartyGaming is the owner and operator of the world’s largest online poker room, PartyPoker.com.

Already reeling under the impact of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that was passed by the US Congress in September, a clearer picture of PartyGaming and its Indian subsidiary’s future would emerge when the LSE-listed company announces its Q3 results on October 20. The sources told this newspaper that the Indian operations would be “rightsized as the firm is not run as a charitable organisation”.

provides a protective layer shielding the earth from ultraviolet radiation.In the troposphere (the layer extending

up 7 to 10 miles from the earth's surface), ozone is a chemical oxidant and major component of photochemical

smog. It can seriously impair the respiratory system and is one of the most wide- spread of all the criteria

pollutants for which the Clean Air Act required EPA to set standards. Ozone in the troposphere is produced

through complex chemical reactions of nitrogen oxides, which are among the primary pollutants emitted by

combustion sources; hydrocarbons, released into the atmosphere through the combustion, handling and

processing of petroleum products; and sunlight.

Ozone Depletion: Destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer which shields the earth from ultraviolet

radiation harmful to life. This destruction of ozone is caused by the breakdown of certain chlorine and/or

bromine containing compounds (chlorofluorocarbons or halons), which break down when they reach the

stratosphere and then catalytically destroy ozone molecules.

Ozone Hole: A thinning break in the stratospheric ozone layer. Designation of amount of such depletion as an

Indian web casino kings lose a billion

New Delhi, Oct. 10: Two Indian founders of the world’s largest online casino, PartyGaming, Mr Anurag Dikshit and Mr Vikrant Bhargava, have lost a fortune estimated at over $1 billion in a matter of days after the company’s shares plunged in response to a US government crackdown on Internet gambling.
Efforts to bring online gambling to India too have suffered a major setback after the US Congress passed a bill on September 30 against Internet gambling. The bill is awaiting President George W. Bush’s assent, which is expected in the next couple of weeks.

The bill makes it illegal to accept bets on the Internet or for credit card firms to make payments to gambling websites. Anurag Dikshit, a software engineer from IIT Delhi who co-founded and remains the biggest shareholder of Gibraltar-based PartyGaming with a 29 per cent stake, held shares worth $1.24 billion before the bill was passed by Congress.

However, his net worth based on his stake in PartyGaming has dropped to about $450 million dollars with a plunge of over 63 per cent in the company’s share price since September 30. He had founded PartyGaming, which controls about 50 per cent of the online poker market, with Mr Vikrant Bhargava, and adult entertainment business entrepreneur Ruth Parasol and her husband Russel DeLeon in 1997.\

Mr Bhargava’s stake has tumbled by over $200 million to about $140 million while the four founders have witnessed a loss of about $2 billion collectively. Mr Dikshit was named as the world’s 207th richest person in 2006 by Forbes magazine with his huge fortune made largely from the listing of PartyGaming in London in June 2005. He was also ranked as the 10th richest global Indian in 2005 by Forbes with a net worth of $3.3 billion.

Ms Ruth and Mr Russel DeLeon hold 14.9 per cent each in the company, while Mr Bhargava holds seven per cent. The husband and wife were tied at 197th place on the Forbes list of 400 richest Americans this year with an estimated net worth of $1.8 billion each. PartyGaming’s share price has dropped to below 40 pence from 107 pence on September 29, before the crackdown on online gambling by Congress.

The stock has lost nearly three-fourth of its value from the all-time high of 158 pence. Meanwhile, PartyGaming is likely to lose its place on the elite FTSE 100 index of the London Stock Exchange after a sharp fall in its market value to about $3.2 billion from an estimated $9 billion at the time of its IPO. Rival 888 would also be dropped from the FTSE 250 index to make room for PartyGaming.

This message is indeed a very inspiring one, and has enabled many of Gurudev's devotees to interpret difficulties as opportunities, consciously, and their efforts have borne fruit, proving beyond doubt the wisdom in the message. In fact, if you study the lives of successful people, you will find, time and again, how they converted difficulties as opportunities and became achievers - be it materially or spiritually A young girl at an age of 18, was married to a 55 year old man. The girl though young in age, was very mature in her thinking. She never cursed anyone, not even accused anyone - not even her prarabdha karma. She analyzed the situation and thought, that it was an opportunity given by the Lord to help her to withdraw from lusts and passions early in life and direct her energies in thoughts of the Lord. Ere long, she proved that her marriage to an elderly man was a blessing in disguise and today a great Mission is standing in her name - worldwide.
Certain events become turning points in life. As Gurudev very beautifully puts it, there is a reason, for every pain that we must bear, for every burden, for every care, for every grief that crushes our heart, for every scalding tear we shed, for every hurt, for every plight, for every lonely, painful night, there is a reason. If we trust God, it all can turn to be for our good. He knows the reason.

The following incident was narrated in the popular Reader's digest. This happened in Delhi. It was written that a Delhi based rich householder living in the US came to India to perform his mother's death ceremony. He had invited about 400 guests to partake lunch. Unfortunately, as it rained very heavily, only a few could respond to the invitation. The gentleman was sad and brooding - sad because the purpose was not fulfilled and brooding over the colossal wastage of food. As the morning turned to noon, he decided that he would serve the food at the slums and engaged a truck for the same. The joy of serving food to the poor and the needy did not end with that day. The hunger turned the pathetic state of the slum dwellers haunted him through out the night. Next morning, he visited all the big star hotels and choultries and enquired about their use of extra food. As expected, the food was being wasted while the poor were starving. He decided that to serve food daily to the poor would be his goal of life and set up an office for this purpose. He took upon himself the task of taking a tempo to all the star hotels and choultries, every day, late in the afternoon to collect the extra food and take it to the slums. The concept has become so popular that he receives calls from people requesting him to collect food. Blessed indeed is this gentleman. Instead of complaining that all his efforts went futile and eventually forgetting all about it, his decision to serve the food at the slums on that day, changed his life and that of the slum dwellers.

As Gurudev says, "What is more important is not what you meet in life but how you meet it". You are ordinary or extraordinary depending on what is your attitude towards the situations that you face and how you respond to the challenges in life.

There is no dearth of personalities who have had the grit and the determination to perceive every hurdle as a stepping stone to success. I know of many who have not been in limelight as they are living a very simple, humble life, quietly in a village or a town, but nonetheless, they are achievers in their own way. I had an opportunity to address the school students which had the reputation of being an excellent high school. In that connection, I was told that the school is run by a single lady who was born and also married into a very rich family and was widowed at an young age of 22. When we view the situation, we would consider it as a very unfortunate event in the life of a young girl. But when we see the turn of events, the incident facilitated the lady to blossom from just being a housewife to being a mother to thousands of children, guiding them with love.
Our Gurudev is a shining example of this thought. Of course, He never felt any situation was a difficulty. There was nothing in this world that could shake up this mighty master. However, events, which we ordinarily would have considered as tragedies, were opportunities for Gurudev to demonstrate to the devotees, Lord Krishna's description of 'Man of Perfection' - A Sthithaprajna. Be it a emergency landing of the aircraft or yagnashala on fire, a ventricular failure or highly diabetic state, a yagna cancelled due to unconducive environment or disciples leaving the mission - nothing could even bring a grin on his face. Sri Gurudev faced life with equal equanimity even in His poorvashrama days. He was jailed for his participation in the freedom movement and later thrown on the streets as he was very ill. That did not deter him. After he recovered, he continued to write powerful articles as he was working as a journalist. He visited Swami Sivananda's Ashram in Rishikesh as he thought that sanyasis are cheats, living upon the society and doing nothing. While living there, he felt there was a deep significance in the spiritual way of life and he continued to stay on at the ashram. He adjusted to the simple life although he was born into a royal family. He was guided by Sivanandaji to study under the tutelage of Swami Tapovanam who lived in Uttarkashi. Gurudev trekked the entire stretch and reached Uttarkashi. A study of "My trek through Uttarkand" would reveal his struggle to reach his Master. He was trained by Swami Tapovanam with strict discipline, that few students could withstand. Sri Gurudev was convinced that the scriptures was not meant for retired life but that the scriptures spoke of a WAY OF LIFE which we need to know when we are young. Inspired by the mighty flow of the Ganges who serves people in the plains way below, Sri Gurudev took upon himself the mighty task of reviving Hinduism in its true sense. Sri Gurudev's glory the life He lived and his contribution is well known.

With such a mighty master as our Guru, it is important that each one of us practise as per his advice and achieve all that we wish to achieve.

Believe it or not, this is a killer question because so many candidates are unprepared for it. If you stammer or adlib you’ve blown it.

By now you can see how critical it is to apply the overall strategy of uncovering the employer’s needs before you answer questions. Example: “As I understand your needs, you are first and foremost looking for someone who can manage the sales and marketing of your book publishing division. From not a single kilometre of highway in 1988, China now has a world-class network of some 41,000 km of

highways, second only to the U.S. in size.

THERE IS perhaps nothing that engenders as much China-envy south of the Himalayas as the erstwhile

Middle Kingdom's multi-laned, silken-smooth highways. At the start of the 1990s India's highway infrastructure

was actually ahead of China's in terms of total route km as well as route km/head of population. Fifteen years

later, while India's expressways languish in pot-holed chaos, China boasts of a world-class highway network of

some 41,000 kilometres, second only to the United States in size.

According to the Chinese Transport Planning and Research Institute, 24,000 km of new highways were built

between 2001 and 2005, averaging a staggering 4,800 km a year. This is roughly equal to the total

expressway length of Canada and Germany combined, the two countries that rank third and fourth in the world

in terms of expressways. In India, such figures might cause more than a few eyes to pop right out, but in

China, 41,000 km of gleaming freeways are still not considered sufficient.

TRAPS:
Blurt out “no way, Jose” and you can kiss the job offer goodbye. But what if you have a family and want to work a reasonably normal schedule? Is there a way to get both the job and the schedule you want?

BEST ANSWER:
First, if you’re a confirmed workaholic, this question is a softball lob. Whack it out of the park on the first swing by saying this kind of schedule is just your style. Add that your family understands it. Indeed, they’re happy for you, as they know you get your greatest satisfaction from your work.
If however, you prefer a more balanced lifestyle, answer this question with another: “What’s the norm for your best people here?”
If the hours still sound unrealistic for you, ask, “Do you have any top people who perform exceptionally for you, but who also have families and like to get home in time to see them at night?” Chances are this company does, and this associates you with this other “top-performers-who-leave-not-later-than-six” group.

This question seems like a softball lob, but be prepared. You don't want to come across as egotistical or arrogant. Neither is this a time to be humble.

ACID Testing: Criteria for Database Reliability

The ACID Test

One of the primary tests for reliability of a database management system (DBMS) is the ACID test. ACID-compliant systems possess certain properties that offer greater protection to stored data in the event of an unexpected hardware or software failure, even if the database is being read from or written to at the time the failure occurs.
In general, an ACID-compliant DBMS is greatly preferred to a non-complaint DBMS. In applications where the availability and integrity of the stored data are critical, an ACID-compliant database is required; non-compliant systems should be automatically rejected.
The ACID test alone does not guarantee reliability. Other factors such as the reliability of the host environment (both hardware and software components), a strictly observed backup policy, etc. are also crucial in maintaining any DBMS.

The four ACID properties are atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability.

Atomicity
When a transaction that updates the database occurs, either all of the update occurs, or none of the update occurs, even if a hardware or software failure occurs during the transaction.
For example, suppose that a particular transaction is supposed to update a record consisting of ten fields of data (name, gender, age, etc.) into a customer database. Further suppose that an unexpected software failure occurs halfway through the transaction. If the DBMS is not atomic, when the database comes back online, the record will be in an unknown state: All, some or none of the fields in the record may have been updated. Therefore, a future transaction that depends on the record may be relying upon incorrect information. In contrast, an atomic DBMS in the same situation would void the already completed parts of the transaction and return to the state before the transaction was attempted.
The mostly widely used mechanism for providing atomicity is the transactional commit/rollback mechanism. A group of write operations in a transactions are attempted. If all of the writes succeed, then the writes are committed to the database; that is, the writes are made permanent. If any of the writes failed, then the database is rolled back to the point before the transaction was started.

Consistency
Any changes to the value of an instance is consistent with all other changes to other values of that instance.
For example, suppose a student checks out a 2N222 transistor. The 2N2222 must be charged against the student's account, the number of 2N2222 transistors available must be decreased by one and the number of 2N2222 transistors in use must be increased by one. If all of these changes do not occur, the database is in an inconsistent state.
An ACID-complaint DBMS provides the tools to enforce consistency, usually in the form of rules checking. However, it is up to the designer to implement consistency enforcement.

Isolation
Isolation prevents changes in concurrent transactions from conflicting with each other. Isolation also allows multiple users to each use the database as if he or she were the only user.
Isolation is primarily accomplished through locking. To lock a table or record prevents other transactions from reading or writing the data in that table or record until the current transaction is finished. This process ensures that no transaction reads data which is no longer valid.
Locking a record is preferable to locking an entire table. Pending transactions on a locked table must wait for the entire table to be unlocked, even if only one record in the table is being updated. In contrast, with record-level locking, only transactions that depend upon the locked record must wait; other transactions can proceed without waiting.

Durability
When a hardware or software failure occurs, the information in the database must be accurate up to the last committed transaction before the failure.
This durability is required even if the failure causes the operating system to crash or the server to shut down. The only exception is a hard disk failure, at which point the database is vaild up to the last successful backup made before the failure.
All durable database management systems are atomic, but not all atomic database management systems are durable.
